A speed turnstile sits where security, throughput, and architecture meet: the lobby. It is a high-cycle pedestrian machine that must validate a credential, open in a fraction of a second, detect the person who follows without one, and fail safe when the fire alarm sounds. When you buy in bulk, a specification error repeats at every lane you install. A badge system without an enforced lane is a suggestion, not a control. The speed turnstile is the enforcement layer, and choosing it badly costs you in three places:

Why sourcing this category is harder than it looks
The market labels very different machines "speed gate": servo-driven lanes with dense sensor arrays, slow swing barriers, flap barriers, and mechanical tripod turnstiles. Datasheets rarely state the sensor pair count, the throughput test condition, or the protocol map to your reader platform. Bulk buyers also carry destination voltage and frequency, safety documentation for the destination regulator, and a spare-parts pipeline for belts, sensors, and panels.

Import and logistics considerations
- Customs classification. Pedestrian turnstiles are typically declared under HS heading 8608 (electromechanical traffic-control equipment), though some jurisdictions classify them under 8479.89. The classification changes the duty rate, so confirm the subheading with your customs broker — the US HTS and EU TARIC databases are public — before you build a landed-cost model.
- Packing. Turnstiles ship as tall, finished cabinets with glass or acrylic panels. Require ISPM-15-stamped wooden crates, corner protection, and panel fixation that survives container transport — cabinet finishes are the most common freight-damage claim in this category.
- Incoterms. EXW keeps control and responsibility with you from the factory gate; FOB and CIF shift transport legs to the seller; DDP pushes customs clearance to the seller and usually hides the duty line. For a first bulk order, FOB with your own forwarder keeps landed cost visible.

Claims are cheap; documents and demonstrations are not. Use three verification layers before a bulk order.
1. Factory video tour, then a live walkthrough. Ask for a recorded tour of the production floor: cabinet fabrication and finishing, drive assembly, wiring, sensor calibration, and the aging-test benches where finished lanes run repeated cycles. Then request a live walkthrough, on short notice, at the lanes your order would be built on. A trading company can forward a polished video; it struggles with an unscheduled live walk to a specific work order.
2. Certificate validation. For every certificate, check the issuing body, the scope, the validity dates, and — most often missed — that the company name on the certificate is the same legal entity signing your contract. A CE Declaration of Conformity should reference the applicable EU directives (Machinery 2006/42/EC, Low Voltage 2014/35/EU, EMC 2014/30/EU); FCC conformity covers the United States market. Cross-check the supplier against its D-U-N-S number, and verify a factory quality management system such as ISO 9001 rather than accepting "certified factory" on trust.

Risks and Mistakes
1. Choosing cabinets on appearance, buying throughput data last
A lane that photographs well but processes people slower than the credential system behind it turns the lobby into the bottleneck. Fix the throughput requirement — peak persons per hour, credential transaction time, acceptable queue — before opening a catalog, and get measured figures in writing.
2. No accessible lane and no egress plan
Most projects need at least one wide or swing lane for wheelchair users and deliveries, and every lane needs defined fire-alarm and power-loss behavior matching local egress requirements. Retrofitting both later is a construction project, not a purchase order.
3. Assuming reader compatibility
"Wiegand in" does not mean your platform works. Confirm the protocol at the level of signal maps and timing — Wiegand, RS485, TCP/IP, or OSDP — including how face terminals mount and power, how alarms report upstream, and whether SDK/API documentation is included. Where documentation is missing, integration becomes a paid discovery project.
4. No spares or service plan for a high-cycle entrance
Speed turnstiles run more daily cycles than almost any other equipment a facility buys; belts, drives, sensor modules, and panels are consumables. If the supplier cannot quote a priced spares package and a support channel today, the multi-year cost of the entrance is unknown — and a single failed lobby lane has no redundancy.
