Tripod Turnstile — Durable Mechanical Access Control for High-Traffic Environments
Factory-direct tripod turnstiles built on a proven mechanical arm barrier design. 304 stainless steel housing, 500K+ MCBF, and IP54 rating for demanding indoor and outdoor installations.
What is a tripod turnstile
A tripod turnstile is a mechanical pedestrian gate with three rotating arms mounted on a central post, controlling single-direction or bidirectional passage one person at a time. It is the most widely deployed turnstile type globally, found in stadium entry gates, factory staff entrances, public transit stations, amusement parks, and school campus perimeters.
Built for volume and reliability
Tripod turnstiles operate on a purely mechanical ratchet-and-pawl mechanism with no complex electronics in the core passage control. This design yields a rated lifetime exceeding 500,000 mean cycles between failures (MCBF), making them the most cost-effective access control solution per passage over a 10-year service life. The 304 stainless steel housing resists corrosion in humid, coastal, and outdoor environments, while powder-coated arm finishes are available in standard or RAL-custom colors to match project aesthetics.
Each unit supports dry contact, Wiegand, and RS485 signal interfaces, allowing direct integration with third-party access controllers, card readers, fingerprint scanners, and facial recognition terminals. A mechanical drop-arm emergency release mechanism permits instant free passage during fire alarms or power loss, meeting international life safety code requirements.
Proven mechanical design
Ratchet-and-pawl mechanism with minimal electronics in the core passage unit. Fewer failure points than motor-driven barriers, resulting in lower lifetime maintenance costs and higher uptime for operators managing hundreds of lanes.
Emergency egress ready
Manual drop-arm release disengages all three arms simultaneously with a single lever pull. No power required for emergency release — the mechanism is purely mechanical and compliant with NFPA and EN fire safety standards.
OEM/ODM configurable
Custom arm lengths, housing finishes, lane width adjustments, and controller interface protocols available. Accept third-party reader mounting plates, branded top covers, and custom LED indicator configurations for integrator-specific deployments.

Materials & housing
304 stainless steel cabinet
Cabinet constructed from SUS304-grade stainless steel with brushed finish. Arm material options include stainless steel or powder-coated mild steel in standard gray, black, or RAL-custom colors. Internal mechanism uses hardened steel pawls and oil-impregnated bronze bushings for maintenance-free operation.
Dimensions
Standard and custom sizes
Standard lane width of 520mm with arm radius of 250mm. Cabinet dimensions approximately 280mm wide x 1200mm high x 300mm deep. Custom lane widths up to 650mm available for accessible passage variants. Surface-mount base plate with four M12 anchor bolt positions.
Throughput & performance
20-30 persons per minute
Rated throughput of 20 to 30 persons per minute depending on verification method (card tap vs. biometric). Pass direction configurable as single-direction entry-only, exit-only, or bidirectional with indicator feedback. 500,000+ MCBF rated mechanical life.
Integration & interfaces
Dry contact, Wiegand, RS485
Standard interface supports dry contact relay trigger, Wiegand 26/34 reader input, and RS485 serial communication for networked lane management. Compatible with all major access control panels including Honeywell, HID, Bosch, and Gallagher.
Power & electrical
Low-voltage DC operation
Powered by 12V or 24V DC input via external power supply unit. Power consumption under 15W during operation — no motor means minimal electrical load. Optional battery backup module supports fail-safe or fail-lock configuration during power interruption.
Environmental & safety
IP54 rated, manual drop-arm
IP54 ingress protection rating suitable for semi-outdoor and covered outdoor installations. Operating temperature range -20 degrees C to +60 degrees C. Manual drop-arm emergency release — pull lever disengages arm mechanism for unimpeded egress. CE certified.
Application environments
Tripod turnstiles are the default choice for projects where budget, reliability, and daily throughput volume are the primary procurement criteria.
Stadiums and sports venues
High pedestrian volume during event ingress and egress. Tripod turnstiles paired with barcode or RFID ticket scanners handle 20-30 validations per minute per lane. Manual drop-arm release enables rapid emergency evacuation. Multiple units deployed in linear gate arrays for 40,000+ capacity venues. Custom arm and housing colors available to match team or sponsor branding.
Factory staff entrances
Industrial facilities use tripod turnstiles at perimeter gates and production floor access points to control shift-change pedestrian flow. Stainless steel construction withstands workshop environments, including exposure to oils, coolants, and airborne particulates. Integration with time-and-attendance systems via Wiegand card readers provides automated shift logging.
Public transit secondary gates
Metro, bus terminal, and rail station secondary entrances where full-height gates are not required. IP54 rating handles covered outdoor platform environments. RS485 networking enables central station management of dozens of lanes with real-time passage counting and fault monitoring.
Amusement parks
Park entry gates processing thousands of visitors daily. Tripod turnstiles integrate with ticket validation scanners and wristband RFID systems. Mechanical simplicity means fewer electronics failures in outdoor queue areas exposed to sun, rain, and dust. Drop-arm emergency release satisfies amusement ride safety codes for rapid evacuation.
School and university campus gates
Campus perimeter pedestrian gates controlling student and visitor access. Card-based access control integrated with campus ID systems. Bridging dual-role as a physical deterrent against unauthorized entry while maintaining a welcoming appearance. Surface-mount installation on concrete plinths with no below-grade excavation required.
Government and public buildings
Secure lobby entry control for municipal offices, courthouses, and administrative buildings. Tripod turnstiles paired with visitor management kiosks create a managed reception flow. Stainless steel finish matches institutional interior standards. RS485 network integration with building security management systems for centralized monitoring.
